Don't Hit the Panic Button!
It may seem there is no logical reason for your sudden, crushing sense of panic. But the difficulty breathing, the racing heart and nausea are all real. So are the intense feelings of imminent danger and the overwhelming urge to escape.
Panic attacks are no laughing matter. While they are not common, to those who experience them they can be both terrifying and debilitating. The sudden onset of intense fear can have many causes and medical problems should be ruled out. But Generalized Anxiety Disorder can be the root cause. So how do you know if you have anxiety disorder?
Do you experience chronic indigestion, fatigue, muscle tension and/or sleep problems? Are you overly self-conscious or overwhelmed by stage fright? Have you been immobilized by irrational fears, compulsive behaviors or perfectionism? Only a professional can give you an expert diagnosis, but if you have several of these symptoms, you may want to see a specialist.
The good news is you can treat this disorder in a variety of ways, including prescription medications. If you’re anxiety symptoms are more manageable and you do not want to try medication, there are many other remedies for anxiety, from mind-body techniques to exercise to calming teas. Some start working right away, while others may help lessen anxiety over time.
Treatments for panic attacks also include individual psychotherapy, family counseling, deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. Exercise is also known to calm and relax and has been shown to reduce anxiety. There are now phone apps for anxiety, too. Some of the more popular ones are Calm, Mindspace, CBT-i Coach, Mindfulness Coach and Moodnotes.
